We talked to a Chemical Engineer

We talked to a Chemical Engineer- Vincent Reurslag

Here's how it went

It was a friendly exchange of experiences and advices. Vincent was really eager to share his thoughts on
the Chemical Engineering world and how it is almost always misunderstood to be a course with no scope.
Vincent disagreed and emphasized that Chemical Engineers are in fact, one of the most demanded Engineers currently,
as booming issues like climate change require Chemical Engineers to come up with the appropriate solutions to tackle it.

When asked about how to implement the practicalities of real world chemical industry processes into our classroom learning,
Vincent mentioned that it is definitely important to know how a factory functions and where to apply what we learn based on its history
with the specific process.  Vincent works with a lot of mass and energy balance equations which help figure out the movement of particles-
this real world application enabled us to understand that there is a real world function for everything we study in a classroom.

Vincent also provided some valuable advices for aspiring Chemical engineers, such as it being important to equip yourself with skills
that normally are not taught to you- like programming in MATLAB, Python, R, SQL, and other languages. It can also be beneficial if one is well
versed in using Excel sheets, Word and similar applications. This automatically gives you an upper edge over other applicants because it highlights
your willingness to offer more than what you are just expected to.

Vincent himself is well versed in Python and MATLAB, which helps him in some of his work.

Reurslag also advised the youth to learn to have fun with what you do. Amidst the race to complete your degree,
it can be easy to lose sight of what your true visions are- and that's why it is important to have fun and live every moment of your university life,
and make the most out of it.

Vincent closed the discussion by stressing on the fact that Chemical Engineering can be quite a confusing path- but most of your dream goals don't come into
your mind on a fine day. Good things take time, and Vincent believes in trusting the process. Being from the Netherlands, he assures us that Chemical
Engineering is at an all time high for being a demanded job all over the world, and that as long as you're well equipped in your discipline,
you have nothing to worry about.

It was a very fruitful conversation and a lovely experience to have this talk with Vincent Reurslag and we can't wait to hear even bigger things from him :)
